“Top Gun: Maverickhas managed to break record after record. Recently, the aviator adventure starring Tom Cruise even managed to beat James Cameron’s “Titanic’ and is the seventh highest-grossing film of all time in the United States, with local grossing of $662 million. If “Top Gun 2” could have been even a little more successful? Maybe, because the British Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton was originally supposed to play as well.
Of course, given his profession, it stands to reason that Lewis Hamilton in “Top Gun 2″ are in good hands – after all, the man earns his money with extreme speed. In an interview with Vanity Fair the seven-time Formula 1 world champion revealed that he is a big fan of “Top Gun’ and wanted to take part in the second part:
“When I heard the second part was coming, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I have to see it [Tom Cruise] ask.’ I said, ‘I don’t care what role it is. I would even sweep in the background as a cleaner.’”
As it turns out, Tom Cruise even made it possible for Lewis Hamilton to get a role in “Top Gun 2” – not as a cleaner, but as a fighter pilot! Unfortunately, the days of filming overlapped with the Formula 1 season finale and Hamilton was unable to accept the role. In the interview, the F1 Champion describes the conversation he had with director Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise as “the most upsetting phone call I’ve ever had”.
However, Lewis Hamilton will soon be working with Joseph Kosinksi, who is currently working on a Formula 1 film for Apple. Brad Pitt will star in the still untitled racing spectacle, playing the role of a former champion coming out of retirement to get back on the track. For the film, Hamilton also took a look at the script to rule out any inconsistencies.
