Quentin Tarantino is perhaps the last great romantic among contemporary filmmakers. If he wishes to end his career as a director after his tenth feature film, it is neither out of fatigue nor because he would have gone around the question, but rather because he wishes to leave in style, at the top of his art and without having made the film too much.
Leaving at the right time
Stories, Quentin Tarantino will always have a thousand to tell. There are his books, his series project, his creation Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood from which we feel capable of giving birth to dozens of other stories, in any form… A few months before his 60th birthday, the American filmmaker has very clear ideas, a frank tone and letting go of those who no longer have anything to prove.
At the microphone of Tom Segura for the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cellarwhere he already spoke about the “problem” Marvel, the author of pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown spoke about his future feature film, which will be his last. Finally, never say never againbut Quentin Tarantino seems to want to stick to it, and close his filmography with ten feature films at the counter (Kill Bill 1 and 2 count as one).
Why will this next film be his last? Has he exhausted his themes? Has he gone around the question? The filmmaker explains that at this stage he is barely at the very beginning of development, and that he has not yet written anything. But even before knowing what he’s going to say, Quentin Tarantino dwells on why do it. Thus, he does not see this film so much in itself as the tenth in a very successful seriesand that as such he has reached heights from which he does not wish to come down.
“I had an incredible career”
Quentin Tarantino is unique, and anyone else would say those lines that would fall on him screaming at gross boastfulness. But Quentin Tarantino loves cinema and respects his audience, and he knows that the admiration shown to him obliges him to show himself to be demanding. Thus, if he makes sure that his next film is his last, it is because he wants to leave at the best time, to see him at the top of his game, and above all not to corrupt his work by drawing too much on the rope.
I did everything I wanted to do, I had an amazing career. I had an enormous chance, a beautiful destiny. I had no idea that the public… In fact, if I had to think about it before, I would have imagined that the public would not accept my films. And it didn’t. And I was able to work at the highest level that a director can do. I want to start at this very high level. I want to leave when the release of a Quentin Tarantino film is a big event.
Stay forever “in the know”
In a few words, Quentin Tarantino refuses to become has-been. All of these films have so far gained impressive recognition. Since the misunderstood, in his words, Boulevard of Death, all of these following films received at least one Oscar. He himself has two “personal” Oscars, those of Best Original Screenplay for pulp Fiction and Django Unchained. Overall, these nine films combine together, according to IMDB, for all festivals and awards ceremonies combined, 523 distinctions for 1145 nominations.
On the public side, Quentin Tarantino has an icon status. All these films were theatrical successes and therefore highly profitable operationswith the exception of Boulevard of Death whose receipts only exceeded its budget by $2 million. His fear, logically, is that he will lose this status.
I don’t want to be the one they say, ‘I remember when I was into him. I remember when I was passionate about it, I remember when I had his posters on my wall. He’s funny and everything , but he’s an old gentleman, it’s not the same anymore, he’s no longer in the game.
If you do too much, you mathematically expose yourself to more mistakes. And after nine films, none of which failed, it would be too bad to spoil this run of stratospheric quality. The sun Quentin Tarantino has soon finished its course, but its sunset will therefore be, according to his desire, sparkling and immaculate.
