In “Moon Knight” Episodes 1 & 2 there is a QR code that leads to a free Marvel comic. This is more than an introduction to the character’s story, it should also be a clue to Moon Knight’s future in the MCU…
In the first two episodes of “Moon Knight“, those responsible for the series have hidden a clever Easter egg: Anyone who scans the QR codes found in the episodes with a smartphone will be redirected to the official Marvel site and can read two free comics there namely the first appearances of Moon Knight in “Werewolf By Night” #32 and #33 from 1975. But there is more to it than that.
Because the comics probably don’t just serve to allow “Moon Knight” fans to read into the history of the character, which differs quite a bit from the interpretation of the character in the MCU series when it first appeared. she should also serve to get in the mood for a new superhero team – a kind of Avengers with a fantasy and horror theme.
After “Moon Knight” comes “Midnight Sons”?
At least since the mid-credit scene of “Eternals”, played by Kit Harington, Dane Whitman received his well-known Black Blade from the comics (and thus became Black Knight) and got a visit from Marvel vampire Blade (Mahershala Ali), everything indicates that Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige is planning an appearance by the Midnight Sons (also known as Midnight Sandns) plans.
The Midnight Sons in the Marvel Comics are a loose grouping of heroes and heroines whose powers are related to magic, mysticism, and other supernatural phenomena. The team includes Doctor Strange and Blade, but also Moon Knight – and the aforementioned Werewolf By Night.
Not only did Moon Knight make his debut in a Werewolf By Night comic, but the Marvel werewolf (played by Gael García Bernal) will also be getting his own Halloween special on Disney+ in fall 2022. It seems very possible that the whole thing could go the other way around in the MCU, with the werewolf making his first appearance in Moon Knight instead. And maybe Moon Knight will also be part of the Halloween special.
Is that the Midnight Sons in the MCU?
So that would give you a whole bunch of potential members for the Midnight Sons in the MCU: Doctor Strange, Blade, Moon Knight, Werewolf By Night, and Black Knight which doesn’t belong in the comics but is also a likely candidate thanks to “Eternals”.
Incidentally, “Moon Knight” leading actor Oscar Isaac has already revealed that he would like the Midnight Sons to meet while also bringing three other names into play: Ghost Rider, Punisher, and Daredevil. You can watch an excerpt from the interview here:
Ghost Rider is frequently part of the Midnight Sons and there have been rumors and hints that Marvel is planning to bring the motorcyclist with the fiery skull into the MCU.
But more interesting are Punisher and Daredevil, who actually don’t belong to the Midnight Sons. Has Oscar Isaac perhaps given away a little too much here? Some characters from the Marvel series “Daredevil” already belong to the MCU after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Hawkeye” and it would only be a short step to the spin-off “Punisher”. It’s quite possible that Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Punisher (Jon Bernthal) will also join the MCU version of the Midnight Sons.
For the time being, this is still music of the future. But if Blade, Black Knight, or Werewolf By Night actually made a guest appearance in “Moon Knight”, that would probably be the final confirmation. And maybe even “Moon Knight” episode 3 will give a new clue if there is also a QR code hidden there that leads to a “Moon Knight” comic…
Moon Knight Episode 3 will be released on Disney+ on April 13, 2022, at around 9 a.m.
