Despite significant supply issues globally, the PS5 has nonetheless been a success since its release last November. Little by little, the different territories are taking stock of sales of the new Sony console. After the million PS5 sold spent in Japan about a month ago, it is the turn of another territory to pass this milestone. And to beat a record in the process.
The sales figures of the PS5 have just passed a new major milestone. The PS5 has indeed passed the million consoles sold in the United Kingdom last August. Information relayed by the site GamesIndustry.biz, comes from the GfK institute. This new statistic means that the PS5 became a millionaire in just 39 weeks of availability across the Channel.
According to official figures, the PS5 took three weeks less than the PS4 to reach this milestone. The PS5 therefore becomes the fastest-selling UK PlayStation in history.
According to GfK, this record was broken at the last minute. Indeed, for the same marketing period, the sales figures of the PS5 were behind those of the PS4 last July. The PS5 was able to overtake its big sister thanks to supplies of consoles arrived at the last moment.
Indeed, sales of PS5 began slowly last August. A machine arrival during the month, however, allowed the console to finish first in sales for the period. In the four weeks leading up to August 28, more than 151,000 consoles have found buyers in the UK. The PS5 therefore finished in first place, ahead of the Switch and the Xbox Series X | S.
How far could sales of the PS5 have gone?
This milestone of the million spent in new territory serves as a further illustration of the great popularity of the console. Such sales figures were achieved by the PS5 in record time, despite supply issues and stockouts.
The current difficult conditions are not preventing Sony from bringing more consoles to the market than in previous launches. And the repeated disruptions show that the large quantities of distributed consoles are not enough to meet the demand.
This new million was reached in record time thanks to a stock arrived at the last minute. Could such sales have been achieved more quickly if supplies had been even greater? We will unfortunately never know.
