It has now been three long years since we have heard from Cygames’ action-RPG. Announced in 2016, the adventure then had something to attract attention … but what is it today?
The last time we could see the tip of a sword was during the Tokyo Game Show 2018, in other words an eternity ago. With its big critters and its medieval-fantasy universe, Project Awakening was presented as Cygames’ very first RPG intended for home consoles. 1163 days later (up to you to convert in hours or minutes), the studio took advantage of the aptly named Cygames Tech Conference to try to reassure us about the progress of the project.
Waking up is our project
The new and brief presentation of Project Awakening will have been captured by the good care of Twinfinite, while Cygames unveiled the strengths of its in-house engine, the Cyllista Game Engine. The new trailer devoted to the RPG with real bits of Monster Hunter in it was therefore logically devoted to the engine, and its ability to easily generate a whole lot of vegetation. The developers then illustrated their point with a few real-time demonstrations, between a forest path that seems to be drawn by a famous celestial brush, and a mountain quickly tinkered with.
If the players will have very few elements to put in their mouths, the technicians of Cygames are not a little proud of the Cyllista Game Engine,
The foliage system includes procedural foliage placement, cloud generation and removal, peak absorption, foliage layer dependencies, and a system for distant foliage. It is designed to effectively place the foliage in a large universe while giving it a natural look.
By combining these automatisms with manual retouching, the artists working on Project Awakening therefore hope to create a singular universe, where the forest seems to occupy an important place. But with only two pieces of videos in the space of three years, very little is still accessible to us …
The most curious can always go for a walk on the official website of the game, and others will wonder if Project Awakening will actually only be released on PlayStation 4, as it was announced several years ago.
