The singular Japanese director Sono Sion shot with the equally crazy Nicolas Cage a film that promises to be crazy: “Prisoners of the Ghostland”. Our expectations are confirmed with a first trailer that fills the eyes.
Prisoners of the Ghostland : Sion Sono’s new trip
Marriage sounds like a given, on paper. Nicolas Cage in front of the camera of Sion Sono, it is a meeting which makes sense as the actor is in a permanent freewheel and constantly finds the means to put his nose in extraordinary projects. This is how we could see him beating himself up against robots in an abandoned amusement park in Willy’s Wonderland, that he wanted to avenge the death of his companion in the indescribable Mandy, that he touched on Lovecraft’s universe in Color Out of Space or that we are waiting to find out in Pig, an improbable story of saving a pig.
In line with all the strange projects that we have just mentioned, he joined forces with Sono Sion to Prisoners of the Ghostland. We find him in the shoes of a criminal enlisted by a governor (Bill Moseley) to enter the disturbing world of Ghostland in order to save his granddaughter (Sofia Boutella). Crazy pressure weighs on his shoulders since he is equipped an explosive combination which will activate if it does not fulfill its objective.
Nicolas Cage is the new Snake Plissken?
The pitch looks like New York 1997 / Los Angeles 2013 but Sion Sono will differentiate himself from John Carpenter by eyeing the pure fantastic. It’s an understatement to say that we can’t wait to see Nicolas Cage in action to save Sofia Boutella. Prisoners of the Ghostland was shown in 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival and returns announce a furious film but not reserved for everyone. Sion Sono cinema is, as a rule, not made for the general public and its uniqueness must be preserved. The first trailer has just dropped and it is indeed a total madness. The director was pleased by concocting a violent delirium populated by ghosts and ninjas. It’s simple: according to Nicolas Cage, it is the most “Savage“in which he filmed. Just that.
We hope not to have to wait too long to discover the film at home because for the moment it doesn’t have a release date. It will be visible to the lucky ones who will go to the Strange Festival in September. An arrival directly on DVD / Blu-Ray or on a platform seems most likely thereafter. In the United States, it will be visible from September 17 in certain theaters and also in digital purchase.
