Guillermo del Toro took a long time to realize his interpretation of “Pinocchio” but he finally succeeded thanks to the support of Netflix. The platform has just released the first teaser and takes the opportunity to give us a big indication of the date it will be online.
Guillermo del Toro revisits Pinocchio
In 2018, the brilliant Guillermo del Toro was acclaimed by the world of cinema with the coronation of The Shape of Water at the Oscars. We had to wait a bit before seeing him back on our screens and it was at the start of the year that he made his mark with Nightmare Alley. The feature film should, a priori, not be a big commercial success. But the Mexican director has another highly interesting project up his sleeve: Pinocchio.
He tackles a cult story with a new animated version expected on Netflix. Unlike the Disney classic, its revisit will be in stop motion. There is no doubt that this artistic direction will bring cachet to the whole. Especially since we know the director for his good formal taste.
Netflix takes advantage of Guillermo del Toro’s hot news to offer us the first teaser of Pinocchio. A preview that focuses on the character of Jiminy Cricket and is careful not to let us meet the wooden hero. We’ll have to wait for a trailer to find out. These images nevertheless allow getting an idea of the identity of the project.
The good news to remember is that the platform announced a release in 2022. For the time being, we only know that the online release will take place in December. An end-of-year slot very rightly chosen to deliver a tale which, we hope, will delight young and old.
A luxury cast for a cult story
As a reminder, Pinocchio tells the story of an old wood sculptor, Geppetto, who makes a living puppet. He establishes a father/son relationship with him. One day, the child starts looking for his parent after noticing his absence. The famous adventures at sea followed, notably with whales. We are not going to redo the whole plot for you as it is known. Guillermo del Toro will obviously use many components but he wishes to present a story set during the reign of Mussolini among our Italian neighbors.
For the occasion, he managed to bring together an attractive cast. Besides the unknown Gregory Mann propelled into the main role, it is David Bradley, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson who will lend their voices to the characters. To top it off, Alexandre Desplat is in on the music, including sequences that will be sung.
