“Pattaya” is Franck Gastambide’s second achievement after his huge success with “Les Kaïras”. As in his first film, the filmmaker stages animals. This time it is an orangutan. Find out who Nathalie the Orangutan is.
Franck Gastambide: the new darling of French cinema
Now 42 years old, Franck Gastambide began his film career in 2009, when he launched the series Kaïra Shopping. Thanks to the success of his show, he derives his concept into a feature film with the film The Kaira which will total more than a million admissions in 2012. Following this triumph, the actor / filmmaker connects the projects. He appears in other people’s films as Made in France ; Good Luck Algeria or The repair area.
He resumed directing in 2016 with his second feature film behind the camera: Pattaya. The work receives a much less warm welcome than on The Kaira but achieves a very good score at the box office (nearly 2 million entries). He then goes on with Taxi 5 which he directed in 2018. The film ranked tenth at the 2018 box office with 4 million admissions. In 2020, he returns with the excellent series Valid, whose season 2 will be released soon.
Pattaya : who is Nathalie?
In The Kaira, Franck Gastambide had chosen to shoot with a bear. However, directing animals is one of the obsessions of directors. There are three universal rules to avoid : animals, children and cars. These three elements are generally hell for filmmakers to deal with. But Franck Gastambide is very fond of animals, and he does not hesitate to highlight them in his films. After the bear in The Kaira, he employs an orangutan in Pattaya. And his meeting with Nathalie the orangutan is quite touching:
I visited several animal parks across the country to find THE hidden gem. And then one day, I ran into Nathalie. It was love at first sight. Every day, I went to his park, we spent at least an hour together getting to know each other. When we became more friends, I was able to allow myself to offer him games related to my scenes.
If Franck Gastambide likes filming with animals as much, it’s because he started his career in the seventh art as an animal trainer. Passionate about animals, especially dogs, he got his first job as a trainer on the set of the film The Crimson Rivers. Enthused by his experience, he specializes and works again on The Pact of the Wolves. Then, he joined the Kourtrajmé collective and began his career as a director with Kaïra Shopping. The rest of the story, you know it!
