We wondered what became of the famous “Paranormal Activity” franchise. It is preparing a comeback with the first trailer for its seventh installment.
Paranormal Activity : scam or stroke of genius?
Since the success of The Blair Witch Project, the movement for low budget horror films shot in found footage has continued to grow : Rec, Cloverfield, and so Paranormal Activity in 2009.
Taking the appearance of an amateur film, this feature film with a very low budget (barely 15,000 dollars) has mainly relied on promotion to attract people to theaters. In fact, the production initially relied on a limited release to create a buzz and make word of mouth work. Subsequently, she set up trailers that have become legendary, in which we saw very few images from the film. Just the screams and horrified faces of the spectators in the room.
The best promotion, however, did not come from production. Indeed, the latter received weighty support in the person of Steven Spielberg who said he was frightened by the film. A shame, when we know that he is the screenwriter and producer of one of the most distressing films of all time: Poltergeist.
Finally, Paranormal Activity wins his bet with the trifle of 193.8 million dollars collected, which makes it one of the highest grossing films in the history of the 7th art. Reaping numerous awards, he also revealed a producer now known for making excessive profit from deliberately broke horror films: Jason Blum.
Paranormal Activity However, there is nothing revolutionary, artistically speaking. Its “false documentary” side and the presence of supernatural elements that frighten a couple in their own house have already been seen and reviewed. This real lack of creativity will have an impact on its many sequels which will even attempt a ridiculous red thread between the episodes. The very idea of a new component is therefore surprising.
A trailer that wants to terrify us
You have to go back to 2015 to see traces of a film in the franchise. While we thought she was out of breath so she comes back this year with Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.
As its first teaser showed, the film directed by William Eubank (Underwater) tries to move away from the recipe of the previous episodes. Indeed, he alternates between found footage and more “traditional” production (with aerial camera shots reminiscent of those of feature films directed by Terrence Malick). However, horror will be present, between ghosts which make the characters flutter, monstrous creatures, and family which seems subject to absolute Evil. A very classic recipe, but we are waiting to see the results.
As a reminder, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin follows Margot (Emily Bader), a young girl who sets out to meet a member of her biological family, living in an isolated Amish community. However, the latter hides very dark secrets, involving in particular evil rituals.
The film will be specially available on the recent Paramount + platform, and scheduled for October 29 in the USA. A great opportunity to watch the film during Halloween, then. However, in France, no date has yet been communicated. It will therefore be necessary to be patient.
