The shocking gesture of the Oscars 2022

Coming to present the statuette for Best Documentary, Chris Rock launched into a speech during which he notably made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. If the remark made him laugh at first, the actor of The Williams Method finally stood up, walked onto the Dolby Theater stage, and punched the comedian in the face.

At the same time, on social networks, many Hollywood personalities have condemned his behavior. Yes, Chris Rock did not want to file a complaint, an investigation was nevertheless opened. A source also told Entertainment Weekly that the Academy would seriously consider taking away his Oscar from the actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams.
During his acceptance speech, Will Smith had already offered a half-worded apology. In tears, the star said:
Richard Williams was a staunch defender of his family. I am overwhelmed by what is happening to me. Love makes you do crazy things. My vocation is to love people and to protect them and to be an anchor for my loved ones. In this job, some will disrespect you and you have to smile, act like it’s normal. Denzel Washington just said to me, “Watch out, the devil always comes in moments of triumph.” I hope the Oscars will invite me back.
Will Smith’s apology to Chris Rock
The day after the ceremony, Will Smith again wanted to speak. On Instagram, the actor first wanted to explain his “emotional” reaction, which he considers “inexcusable” :
Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior last night at the Oscars was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted on the spot with emotion.
The actor then spoke directly to Chris Rock:
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I overstepped the bounds and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions haven’t reflected the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
The star concluded:
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the show’s producers, everyone in attendance, and everyone watching the ceremony around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams family and the teams of The Williams Method. I deeply regret that my behavior tainted what was otherwise a wonderful experience for all of us.
Will Smith finished his message by recalling that it is “in the process of improvement”.
