“On the Run” with Harrison Ford is one of the best thrillers of the 1990s. In the sequel “On the Hunt”, which is showing on TV today, Wesley Snipes has taken on the leading role – and is being hunted by Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr., among others.
With “On the Run” in the 1990s, Andrew Davis achieved something that is still rare today: namely, getting involved in the Academy Awards as a genuine genre film – and not just in the technology Oscars, but in the main categories. The breathless thriller starring Harrison Ford was nominated for seven Oscars (including Best Picture). In the end, Tommy Lee Jones won Best Supporting Actor.
“On the Run”, based on the 1960s TV series of the same name, not only made a name for itself at awards ceremonies but also convinced critics and audiences alike and grossed more than eight times its $ 44 million worth of Budgets at the international box office. No wonder a sequel was filmed quickly.
Far less successful than its predecessor and without Harrison Ford in the lead, 1997’s “On the Hunt” once again starred Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones in his iconic role as Chief Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard. If you haven’t seen “Auf der Jagd” yet, you can do so tonight at 11:10 p.m. on Kabel 1 or get the Blu-ray for a small dollar via Amazon:
That’s what “On the hunt” is about
US Marshal Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) is on the hunt for murder suspect Mark Roberts (“Blade” star Wesley Snipes). This is said to have killed two agents of the Diplomatic Security Service. Although his fingerprints were found at the crime scene, Roberts insists he had nothing to do with the crime. After a brutal incident during the transport of prisoners, the plane has to be emergency loaded – and Roberts takes flight.
Although Sam Gerard has increasing doubts that Mark Roberts is really to blame for the murders, he and his team (including Iron Man icon Robert Downey Jr.) hunt down the man who is now doing everything to protect his innocence to prove. Gerard becomes even more skeptical when he receives crucial information about Roberts’ personal background. But the hunt is already in full swing…
A gripping old school thriller
If you have a soft spot for 1990s genre cinema, you are welcome to watch “On the Hunt”. Of course, you shouldn’t expect a classic like “On the Run”, which we consider to be one of the best thrillers of all time. Director Stuart Baird (“The Lonely Choice”, “Star Trek: Nemesis”) proves to be a solid craftsman and unfolds a very classic suspense scenario in which the search for the truth is a race against time.
What is particularly impressive about “Auf der Jagd” is the large-scale emergency landing sequence in the first half of the film, for which a 360-meter-long section of road was specially built so that a detailed model airplane could slide over it at around 100 km/h. Even more, than “On the Run” and “On the Hunt” relies on (handmade) show values.
What is also interesting about “Auf der Jagd” is the cast, which shows up with some familiar faces. While Tommy Lee Jones once again embodies the fierce lawman Sam Gerard, Wesley Snipes can show himself at the height of his creativity in the role of the hunted. In addition to Robert Downey Jr., who follows Wesley Snipes with Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pantoliano (“Matrix”), and Daniel Roebuck (“Final Destination”) with the party.
