THE FILM OF THE DAY
Long before James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997, passengers from The Adventure of Poseidon are victims of a spectacular shipwreck. While they think they are quietly celebrating the New Year on board a luxury cruise, they find themselves trapped inside the liner, lifted by a tidal wave!
Released in 1972, it is one of the first disaster films, adapted from the eponymous novel by Paul Gallico. The latter was particularly inspired by a trip he had made on the Queen mary, where a huge wave had sent people and furniture across the ship. It is also on this boat that the filming took place and that the actors performed the majority of their stunts. It is this captivating realism, mixed with a deep empathy for a group of very ordinary heroes, that makes the success of this film, nominated ten times at the Oscars and awarded the Special Achievement Award.
