“O’Brother”, a nugget made by the Cohen brothers, made its debut in theaters more than twenty years ago. Discover the unusual measure taken by the filmmakers to guarantee the safety of their team on the set.
O’Brother : homage to Homer
In case you didn’t know, let’s start by specifying that the feature film worn by Georges Clooney is freely inspired of the monument that is The odyssey from Homer. However, the Coen brothers admit not having never actually read the work that inspired so many others after her – we think in particular of Big fish. These are therefore cult references as well as other adaptations that gave birth to O’Brother.
As for the plot of the feature film, it revolves around three prisoners : Ulysses, Delmar and Pete. The latter manage to flee their prison, nestled in Mississippi, hoping to return to their former lives. Relentlessly linked by chains, these three anti-heroes, as unusual as they are endearing, embark on an adventure unlike any other. During their journey, they will meet many obstacles and colorful individuals to say the least. But beware ! The shadow of Sheriff Cooley, determined to put them back behind bars, hovers dangerously behind them.
A beautiful bunch of enigumènes
In O’Brother, the Coens find several of their leading actors. Thus, John Turturro and John Goodman (The Big Lebowski) are both in the game. Ulysses is played by Georges Clooney, who has also agreed to play in the film without even reading the script. The actor was particularly admiring of the work of the Cohens: when they came to find him to offer him the role, he jumped at the chance !
The rest of the cast for this comedy consists of Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen), Holly Hunter (Copycat) or Daniel von Bargen (Malcolm) in the role of the heroes’ pursuer.
Forewarned is forearmed
Those who have already seen O’Brother know that the film is set predominantly in rural Mississippi, so comprising many scenes in a plant decor to say the least provided. Joel Cohen has just indulged in some confidences on this filming in the countryside, going so far as to reveal that he and his brother had hired a “snake catcher”. As the latter can take advantage of the tall grass and thick vegetation to camouflage themselves, the filmmakers have decided to call in a professional to guarantee the safety of both actors and technicians. It must be said that an accident could quickly have happened in such conditions.
Corn how does such a speaker work ? That’s a good question to which the director of O’Brother obviously answered. The specialist was walking on the set armed with a golf club ! If he ever saw a snake, he would wrap it around the club and slipped into a bag meant for that purpose. For the record, Joel Cohen admits to having yielded to curiosity by asking the man how to appoint someone carrying out this original activity.
He replied: “An idiot”.
The humor seemed to be more than welcome on the set of the feature film, unlike our reptile friends!
