After long years of waiting, Marvel Studios has just formalized a project around Nova. For the moment, we do not yet know if it will be a feature film or a series for the Disney + platform. The program will be written by Sabir Pirzada.
Nova: Marvel Studios formalizes the project
Finally, Richard Rider, aka Nova, will soon join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCUs). According to Deadline Sabir Pirzada, the screenwriter of the series Moon Knight which will be released this Wednesday, March 30 on Disney+, has been hired to write a story around Nova. Deadline does not specify whether it will be a feature film project or simply a new series for Disney +. On our side, since it’s Sabir Pirzada, more specialized for the small screen (Person of Interest, Roswell, New Mexico, The Crossing), who will take care of the script, one leans more towards the hypothesis of the series.

Nova Corps member Richard Rider has been expected in the MCU for many years now. Since 2014 with Guardians of the Galaxy to be exact. In effect, the planet Xandar and the Nova Corps (a bit the equivalent of the Green Lanterns in the Marvel universe) are presented in James Gunn’s film. The Guardians notably cross paths with Nova Prime embodied by Glenn Close and Rhomann Dey camped by John C. Reilly, both members of the Nova Corps. It was enough for fans to speculate on the forthcoming introduction of Richard Rider, the most iconic member of the Nova Corps. But since then, still nothing.
Things got worse when, in Avengers: Infinity War, viewers learn that Thanos retrieved the Stone of Power by destroying Xandar. A story that takes up the evolution of Richard Rider as Nova Prime in the comics. Indeed, in the stories of the comics, the latter becomes the only remaining Nova, after Annihilation destroys the planet Xandar and the entire Nova Corps. However, once again, in the MCU, no Richard Rider on the horizon…
Who is Richard Rider?
In the comics, Richard Rider was created in 1976 by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema. Originally from Queens, Richard Rider is chosen by Rhomann Dey to join the Nova Corps. As discussed in the previous paragraph, after the Annihilation genocide, Richard Rider, last Nova inactivity, becomes the receptacle of the Worldmind the intelligent database of the Xandarian civilization.

Logically, the MCU should use the genocide of Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War to introduce Richard Rider. Currently, as the series has been able to prove Hawkeye and Wanda VisionMarvel Studios likes to take central elements of the MCU to present them from a different point of view. It is in this logic that the show centered on Clint Barton returns in 2012 during the invasion of New York by the Chitauris to present Kate Bishop. Or Wanda Vision expands on Thanos’ snap from yet another angle. The introduction of Richard Rider could thus allow seeing Thanos destroy the planet Xandar without any other form of trial.
Subsequently, this cosmic vigilante could appear in other sagas, such as in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the comics, Sam Alexander, the latest Nova, is indeed a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy. To be continued.
