It is one of the most major and tragic events of the last decade. On April 5, 2019, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral was set ablaze, offering a fascinating and terrifying spectacle. Almost three years later, within a month, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film on this fire will hit theaters. Today we discover the first images of “Notre-Dame burns” in a captivating teaser.
A historic fire
On April 15, 2019, around 6:20 p.m., a fire broke out in the framework of Notre-Dame Cathedral. A monument among the most emblematic of Paris and France, and whose fire will stun the whole world. The spectacular images went around the planet, with the immense flames ripping open the roof and causing the fall of the iconic spire, the work of the architect Viollet-le-duc. A real national drama that moved beyond the community of the faithful of the Catholic Church, since believers and non-believers alike were moved by it. A film tells the story of this tragic event, entitled Notre-Dame is burning, and will be in theaters in 2022.
Jean-Jacques Annaud unveils the first images of Notre-Dame is burning
To tell this story and the intervention of the firefighters, it was necessary a director who knows how to be very ambitious while remaining fair. This is how Jean-Jacques Annaud, at ease in directing a big show to tell any type of story, found himself at the helm of the project. The director of The bear, The Name of the Rose and Stalingrad in particular, had declared in April 2020 to want to make a film, which he therefore did from March 2021. He declared a month later to France Info :
I immediately felt the extraordinary cinematographic merits. Beyond the disaster and the sorrow, of course, there is precisely the emotion and the spectacle of fire.
Today we can thus discover the first impressive images of his film. A fictional film, with professional actors and actresses (Pierre Lottin, Chloé Jouannet and Samuel Labarthe in particular), scripted with Thomas Bidegain. To realize Notre-Dame is burning, the director used exterior images produced by the media and by anonymous people, and recreated the interiors in the studio to show the fire and the heroic intervention of the firefighters.
Notre-Dame is burning is expected at the cinema March 16, 2022.
