It warms your heart as a “Game Of Thrones” fan: With “House Of The Dragon” not only the game for the Iron Throne has started again, but also the game with the prophecies. In addition to the vision of his ancestor Aegon mentioned by King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), who foresaw the threat posed by the White Walkers, the casual statements of his daughter Helaena (Evie Allen) turn out to be extremely important.
In Episode 6, for example, Helaena predicted that her brother Aemond (Leo Ashton) would get a dragon, but would “close” one eye in return – just as it happens in Episode 7. And in the current episode “House Of The Dragon” it’s worth listening carefully again when Helaena speaks:
At the memorial service honoring Laena Velaryon, Helaena plays with a spider while uttering a seemingly meaningless quip: “Hand on the loom, black as charcoal, green as fern. Dragons of flesh weave dragons of yarn.” With that, she predicts the coming civil war between the two warring factions of House Targaryenwhich is at the core of House Of The Dragon.
The so-called “Dance of the Dragons” is played out between two parties: The Greens around Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and the Blacks around Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). Green burns the beacon atop the High Tower, home of Alicent’s family, we learned that back in episode 5 when Alicent’s green dress became a kind of declaration of war. And black is the traditional crest color of House Targaryen.
But how exactly are Helaena’s words to be understood? What has the loom to do with it, and the flesh kite and the yarn kite? This probably means that the warring Targaryen factions (“dragons of flesh”) are already weaving their Targaryen (“dragons of yarn”) flags for the coming war and that in each case with green (Alicent & Co.) or black (Rhaenyra & Co.) fabric.
Or to translate this into a more common metaphor: The two Targaryen factions are already sharpening knives, except that one sharpens green knives and the other black knives.
Helaena’s new prophecy should then lose all of its meaning in “House Of The Dragon” episode 9 and episode 10 at the latest. Those episodes are titled “The Green Council” and “The Black Queen.” But first episode 8 will come on October 10, 2022.
