One of the first blockbuster roles former Baywatch and Stargate: Atlantis star Jason Momoa landed after his breakthrough role as Khal Drogo on Game Of Thrones was as the muscle-bound barbarian on Conan. But the remake of the cult battle record, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role, not only crashed at the box office (a budget of $90 million compared to a miserable $63 million worldwide), it also became historic from critics and fans alike Action-fantasy carnage panned almost unanimously.
By the way, Jason Momoa himself does not see it that differently – and agrees an interview with the British lifestyle magazine GQwhich is mainly about his upcoming mega blockbusters “Aquaman 2” and “Fast X’ now joins the chorus of ‘Conan’ despisers:
“I’ve been in a lot of things that were really crappy and films where it just wasn’t in my hands anymore. ‘Conan’ is one of them. Shooting was one of my best experiences ever. But then the film was taken from us and turned into a big pile of shit.“
Such a mega flop like “Conan” would certainly have meant the end of a career for many young actors – at least as an A-list star. But Jason Momoa quickly got back on his feet. After a few years with smaller projects like Walter Hill’s “Shootout – Kein grace” alongside Sylvester Stallone, the big turning point came in 2016: In “Batman v Supermanhe experienced his first appearance as Aquamanwhose first solo adventure of 2018 is still ahead of “Batman v Superman‘ and ‘Wonder Woman’ is the highest-grossing DCEU film of all time. The adventure series “Frontier” also started on Apple TV+ in the same year.
But despite the hammer year 2016, Jason Momoa still doesn’t seem to have reached the top of the line. Instead, everything indicates that he will finally establish himself as a box office megastar in 2023 – because then two blockbusters will start within just two months, namely “Aquaman 2” on March 16 and “Fast X’ on May 18th, both of which have a very good chance of breaking the magical one billion dollar mark at the global box office!
