Earlier this week, we told you that a working SEGA Saturn emulator for Nintendo Switch was discovered in a compilation of retro games recently released in Japan. And if two of the three titles contained in this compilation were already available on the eShop Switch in Europe, the physical version was for its absent subscribers. But that will change soon.
The Cotton Guardian Force Tribute compilation, which runs using a SEGA Saturn emulator, will soon have a boxed version on Nintendo Switch and PS4 in Europe. The thing has just been formalized by the publisher Strictly Limited Games.
According to him, pre-orders for these two versions of the compilation will open very soon. Indeed, these physical versions can be reserved from October 17 at midnight Paris time. And according to Strictly Limited Games, there clearly won’t be something for everyone.
Specifically, two versions of Cotton Guardian Force Tribute will be offered on both platforms. A Collector’s Edition and a Limited Edition. The first will be limited to 2,500 copies on Switch and 1,000 copies on PS4. Same distribution for the second. In Europe, therefore 7,000 copies of the compilation will be in a hurry.
That being said, remember that Cotton Guardian Force Tribute contains SEGA Saturn versions of three games: Cotton Boomerang, Cotton 2 and Guardian Force. According to the first feedback from players who have tried the Japanese Switch version of the compilation, the emulation is not perfect.
Saturn emulator for Switch on one side, nostalgic compilation on the other
And while this product might appeal to early Cotton fans, it’s not for these titles that it is talked about. As mentioned previously, owners of the Switch version have spotted that these three games run on Switch using a Saturn emulator.
And that with the help of a little hack, the latter can be used to run other SEGA Saturn games. The worst part is that many of these titles perform better than the games officially included in the compilation. The discovery being still recent, it is a safe bet that fans of the 32-bit console from SEGA will continue to look into the case of Cotton Guardian Force Tribute.
Finally, it should be noted that Cotton Guardian Force Tribute will only be available on the Strictly Limited Games Shop. The Collector’s Edition will sell for 69.99 euros while the Limited Edition will cost 39.99 euros. Pictures of these different versions are available in our gallery below.
