While Night and Day is broadcast tonight on France 2, zoom in on the next action feature films starring Tom Cruise.
If Tom Cruise is a jack-of-all-trades actor, equally at ease in comedy as in drama, he is above all a man of action. Next year, he will notably revisit two of his cult roles: Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 7 and Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun 2.
A HIGH-RISK SHOOTING
It is once again under the direction of Christopher McQuarrie, to whom we already owe the episodes Rogue Nation and Fallout, that the actor has boxed the seventh adventure of Ethan Hunt. The shots ended last week after starting in February 2020 and having been repeatedly put on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The release, several times postponed, of this Mission Impossible 7 (a sequel to which has already been ordered for 2023) is now scheduled for September 28, 2022 in France. And if the plot is still kept secret, we know on the other hand to whom Tom Cruise will give the reply in this new part.
Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Vanessa Kirby will all be back, just like Henry Czerny, who had not been seen in the franchise since the first episode! New faces will also appear including Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes or Shea Whigham, who replaced Nicholas Hoult in the role of the villain.
Obviously, Tom Cruise still splurged on the stunts side, notably performing a leap into the void on a motorcycle that he describes like “the most dangerous waterfall” of his life. Shooting photos posted by the crew also portend a fight on the roof of a moving train.
Finally, we know that the film will take its heroes to several European countries, including Norway, Poland, Italy (sequences were shot in Rome and Venice) and England.
BACK TO SOURCES
36 years after being propelled to the top of Hollywood by Tony Scott’s Top Gun, Tom Cruise will reprise his role as hothead in Top Gun: Maverick on May 25, 2022. If the release of the feature film has also been greatly impacted by the pandemic, the shooting had, before that, been postponed for a year to allow the team to perfect the aerial choreography, described as revolutionaries by his star.
In this sequel, Maverick continues to push his limits as a test pilot but refuses to rise in rank, as it would force him to give up flying. In particular, he is responsible for training a detachment of young graduates from the Top Gun school for a special mission that no pilot would ever have imagined.
There he meets Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late friend, navigator Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Faced with an uncertain future, haunted by his ghosts, Maverick will have to face his worst nightmares during a mission that will require the greatest sacrifices …
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, with whom Tom Cruise had previously worked on Oblivion, this sequel will also see the return of Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazanski. However Kelly McGillis was not contacted to resume her role of Charlie.
Paramount Pictures France
Besides Miles Teller, the new generation of pilots will include Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Lewis Pullman and Danny Ramirez among its ranks. Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm round out the cast.
AND AFTER, SPACE?
Tom Cruise also has three other projects with Doug Liman: a potential sequel to Edge of Tomorrow and two films set in space. The first, Luna Park, would take place on the Moon and the second, planned in collaboration with Elon Musk and NASA, should … actually turn in space !
