The next attempt to bring “Tarzan” to the cinemas as a film franchise is launched. Warner published in 2016 Bros. “Legend Of Tarzan” with Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie and Christoph Waltz and hoped for a film series – as is well known, nothing came of it. The reviews are too mixed, the box office results too bad for the action adventure. But Tarzan is one of those characters that is so iconic that studios will keep trying to cast him in film form and thus to lure the audience into the cinema – Sony Pictures is now starting the next attempt.
As The Hollywood Reporters reported, Sony has secured the film rights to the character Tarzan, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs as the hero of a pulp story series in the early 20th century. Now the material is to be developed into a new franchise that “reinvents” the main character and her adventures for a modern audience.
And that is also necessary if you want to be successful with “Tarzan”. Because if you take a look at the origins of the character, who is after all more than 100 years old, and her story, you will not only discover gripping adventures in the jungle, but also many stereotypes, an uncritical approach to colonialism and problematic character drawings such as that of the “white saviour”.
But it will be a while before we actually see the first of potentially several “Tarzan” films. First of all, the rights deal is done and dry – everything else has to be worked out first. So far, neither producers nor people for script and direction are on board.
