On September 21st we learn in “Star Wars: Andor,” how it came about that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) became the scheming rebel leader instrumental in stealing the Death Star’s plans and ultimately destroying the Empire. After “Obi-Wan Kenobi” not only disappointed many critics, but also a significant part of the fans, “Andor” now of course has to carry a doubly heavy burden on its shoulders and not only work on its own, but also the favor win back the Star Wars following.
We’ll see if that’s the case next week, when “Star Wars: Andor” is coming to Disney+ with three episodes. The first voices of some press representatives*, who have already been allowed to see up to four episodes, promise not only a really good series, but also a completely new experience within the story from a galaxy far, far away. Not only lovers of “Rogue One” should get their money’s worth here, instead “Andor” offers spectacle as well as character drama and should offer a grandiose acting Diego Luna in the leading role.
After this short introduction, we will now introduce you to some of the voices of our US colleagues who have already been able to get a glimpse of the series.
Sabina Graves from gizmodo points out in her tweet that the suspenseful opening of “Andor” develops directly into a very personal story. “Diego Luna shines as a survivor as a fringe who, like so many others ready to rise up, finds himself instrumental in the dawn of a rebellion.” Film critic Stephen Libbey also echoed the praise for Luna.
Jordan Maison, not just for cineflix writes, but also in the scene as “Star Wars”-Insider knows, is so enthusiastic about “Andor” precisely because the series has so far “most adult story with subtle worldbuilding”. According to the Maison, production quality and acting should be top-notch.
Maggie Lovitt from colliders writes in her tweet: “‘Andor‘ is different from everyone else ‘war of stars‘-Story we’ve seen before. Diego Luna finds himself at the center of a stunning and dangerous world in turmoil. It’s gritty, mature, and the most intelligent and informed story we’ve had yet. Tony Gilroy is a genius.”
Michael Lee from Geeks Of Doom and The Nerds Of Color was able to see the first four episodes of “Andor” and is completely over the moon, which he expresses in several tweets. He refers to the series as “dark and gritty spy thriller” and says the first four episodes are “populated with complex characters”. It also deals with topics “that reflect the world we live in today.”
As always, one must of course take into account that the first voices from the USA are often much more positive than more detailed reviews, for which the embargo period expires shortly before the start of next week.
However, it must be said that we at “Star Wars: Andor” are seeing almost universally positive to effusive reactions, so we expect that “Andor” will make the displeasure with “Obi-Wan Kenobi” a little forgotten. In any case, the anticipation of the new “Star Wars” series should now increase among many fans.
“Star Wars: Andor” premieres on September 21, 2022 on Disney+ with three episodes.
