We already noted last week that Netflix is taking it a little easier after the long-awaited start of the fifth season of “Cobra Kai”. After all, there was still a big title on Friday with the second season of the fantasy hit “Fate: The Winx Saga”. After the “Fate” replenishment, there is finally a small Netflix dry spell before the new Sisi series “The Empress” awaits us at the end of September.
In order to still pick a few gems from the Netflix program this week, we have scoured the upcoming restarts very carefully. Here are the highlights from Netflix’s week of September 19-25, 2022.
The beginning of the Netflix week in particular is very leisurely this time. On Monday there will be something for the little viewers of the streaming service, who can look forward to the third season of the children’s animated series “A Funny Dog’s Life”.
What is usually the weekend is Tuesday this week: Netflix has not yet announced any new films and series. But there will be – so much to be anticipated at this point – especially exciting replenishments this coming weekend.
The fact that serial killers not only exert a strange fascination on many crime fans, but also on serial jack of all trades Ryan Murphy, has been proven several times by the director, author and producer in his hit series “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story”. placed. In the fifth season of the former (“Hotel”), the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer appeared on the sidelines. In his new miniseries project “Dahmer – Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer”, Murphy is now fully dedicated to the (at least) 16-times killer, played here by “AHS” veteran Evan Peters.
After Patrick Süskind’s world bestseller “Perfume” only served as loose inspiration for a modern crime series in the ZDFneo series “Parfum”, “Der Parfumeur” is now taking a very similar path. The Netflix film is also based solely on the motifs of the popular template and therefore weaves its own killer story set in the present. It centers on a young inspector (Emilia Schüle) who recently lost her sense of smell and would do anything to regain it. When she meets a charismatic perfumer (Ludwig Simon) who doesn’t even shy away from murder in search of the perfect scent, she gets involved in a dangerous game.
On the other hand, the two true crime series “The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist” and “Wanna Marchi: The TV Fraudster” deal with very real crimes. While the former is dedicated to the series of burglaries in the homes of many Hollywood stars, which was also taken up in Sofia Coppola’s satire of the same name, the latter is about the eponymous teleshopping saleswoman who ended up in prison for fraud.
Just recently, with Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives’ a celebrity-cast film version of the true events surrounding a football team trapped in a Thai hell has launched on Amazon Prime Video. With “Thai Cave Rescue” there is now the next preparation of the historic rescue operation from 2018 – this time from Thailand itself and in the form of a six-part mini-series.
It continues on Thursday with “Fast Money” (Season 2), the continuation of the Swedish business thriller film trilogy “Easy Money”, and the children’s music series “Karma’s World” developed by rapper and “Fast & Furious” star Ludacris (Season 4).
The largest mass of new Netflix content awaits us again in this quiet week on Friday. Even if there are no titles on the scale of real Netflix hits, we still want to highlight two films separately. On the one hand there is the thriller-drama “Lou”, in which Oscar winner Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) goes in search of a kidnapped girl together with “Birds Of Prey” star Jurnee Smollett. And on the other hand, we can also highly recommend the French action drama “Athena”, which presents us with a technically absolutely impressive adrenaline rush in a tough cops vs. teenagers story, especially at the beginning.
Netflix Friday is rounded off by a colorful bouquet of smaller films and series – from Tyler Perry’s historical crime drama “A Jazzman’s Blues” to “Pokémon’ replenishment with the ‘Arceus Chronicles’ to the six-part Spanish cancer drama ‘The Girls from the Back Row’ and the second season of the Indian telephone scam series ‘Jamtara – The Phisher Village’.
With “The Denver Clan” (or “Dynasty” in the original) a new edition of the soap classic of the same name about the intriguing power struggles of the very wealthy Carrington and Colby families was launched in 2017. Five years later, Season 5 is coming to Netflix – just days after it ended on US television. However, this is also the general finale of the series, as it was announced in the middle of the fifth season that this would be the last. With 108 episodes in the end, the remake is “only” about half as long as the iconic original.
The manga “Fullmetal Alchemist”, whose animated adaptations are considered two of the best anime series of all time, is also cult. The adaptation of the same name from 2003 ranks 200th in the IMDb list of the best rated series, while the follow-up series “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood”, which is even more closely based on the original, even ranks 16th! And for the many fans of the steampunk fantasy story, “Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy” is the third part of the live-action adaptations on Netflix on Saturday.
At the end of the week, you can look forward to a real film treat that has so far unjustly gone under the radar in Germany. The abysmal crime comedy “The Kid Detective” is not only very popular with many DashFUN editors, but was also able to garner a large number of favorable reviews (74 points from Metacritic85 percent positive reviews at Rotten Tomatoes).
And yet the story about a wrecked ex-child detective (Adam Brody), who one day has to deal with a life-changing murder case, has neither a cinema nor a DVD start in Germany, but at some point simply appeared on Sky. Now Netflix is following suit and hopefully finally giving the film the attention it deserves.
