The novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald belongs to the literary general knowledge. The story about the young, mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, who has been in love with the beautiful Daisy Buchanan for years, who married another man during his military service, is not only considered to be THE masterpiece by Fitzgerald (who, for example, also wrote “The Night Is Tender“ wrote), but is also a subject that inevitably had to find its way onto the silver screen. This happened several times – most recently in 2013 with Baz Luhrmann’s famous “The Great Gatsby”, which can now be streamed with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video.

In the official DashFUN review, the extremely visually stunning and extremely dynamic adaptation of the novel was given an extremely strong 4 out of 5 possible stars. In his conclusion, our author Carsten Baumgardt writes: “Kitsch berserker Baz Luhrmann brings rap to 1920s Wall Street, fueling his love and social drama with a big helping of it ‘Moulin Rouge‘-Esprit and celebrates the excess of an excessive upper class. Despite the visual madness, this one will ‘Great Gatsby‘ largely does justice to the literary original by F. Scott Fitzgerald.”
The cast of the film is also terrific: alongside Tobey Maguire (“Spider-Man: No Way Home’), Joel Edgerton (‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’), Carey Mulligan (‘Drive’), Elizabeth Debicki (‘Tenet’), Jason Clarke (‘Planet of the Apes: Revolution’) and Isla Fisher (‘Nocturnal Animals’) Of course, “The Great Gatsby” above all offers Leonardo DiCaprio the big stage to really shine. The Oscar winner not only gives the flamboyant mystery on two legs, but also proves his flair for portraying fragile, vulnerable characters – and thus gives the intoxicated production an emotional drop.
The unsuccessful author Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922. It’s a time of loose morals, glitzy jazz, and excessive bootlegging. On the hunt for his own American dream, he meets nebulous millionaire party organizer Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Carraway also meets his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), with whom Gatbsy is in love.
However, she is tied to her blue-blooded and unfaithful husband Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). The young author is slowly drawn into the engaging world of the super-rich with all their illusions, excesses, hopes and deceptions. Witnessing this world so alien to him and the world he inhabits himself, he writes a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and tragedy of the highest order.
