Ever since it was first announced, the self-deprecating comedy Massive Talent has garnered a lot of hype. Because in the action-fun, Nicolas Cage plays a money-struggling version of himself who agrees to make fun of her world’s biggest fan for a hefty fee. But as excited as the showing of this film got Cage fans and fans of frisky comedies in which filmmakers make fun of themselves, the spark didn’t jump over to the box office.
Although “Massive Talent” did not ignite a fire of enthusiasm among the general public last summer, fireworks will be set off again in the home cinema for the comedy. Then “Massive Talent” is now available not only as a standard edition on DVD and Blu-ray and as a stream, but also in two stylishly designed 4K editions: as a steel book and as a media book.

Both the 4K Steelbook and the 4K Mediabook also contain the film on Blu-ray. The same applies to them 4K Standard Edition* from Massive Talent. No matter which edition you choose, the bonus material includes an audio commentary and a recording of a Q&A on the crazy comedy from the SXSW Film Festival, which can be understood as a love letter to Nicolas Cage and his unique vita.
Nicolas Cage (played by Nicolas Cage) has been a shadow of his former self for a string of flops, critically acclaimed films and critically acclaimed flops. And he’s in deep debt, too! Luckily in Javier Gutierrez (“The Mandalorian”-Star Pedro Pascal) an extremely rich super fan who wants to book him for a birthday party – of course there is a lucrative fee! Cage agrees, but is told by the CIA that Gutierrez is a dangerous arms dealer whom he is supposed to spy on. This gives Cage qualms, because he thinks Gutierrez is damn nice. He loves Paddington 2, dammit!
With just over 100,000 tickets sold, “Massive Talent” played a minor role in German cinemasand that despite a number of positive reviews such as ours 3.5 star review. To put this in perspective: on its opening weekend alone, the latest revival of “Avatar – Departure for Pandora” already more people. And also the little-noticed comedy “JGA: Jasmin. gina Anna.” got rid of more tickets—all without the Nicolas Cage star power and dazzling references to a bright, multifaceted acting career.
Now fans of Cage and/or Pascal can catch up on “Massive Talent” in the home cinema – or watch it over and over again with previously unsuspecting friends to hook them up. With Tiffany Haddish, Neil Patrick Harris and Demi Moore there are three other fairly familiar faces who lend recognition to the meta-comedy. And at least some film fans should also enjoy director David Gordon Green dropping by. From now on, you can reveal to your visitors in Cage/Pascal-Buddy-style on upcoming film nights that a much more prominent director was originally intended for the film.
In the meantime, you shouldn’t hope for a sequel to “Massive Talent”., because the action comedy also went swimming outside of Germany: The 30-million-dollar production didn’t even break in its budget in cinemas worldwide. So a lot of DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K editions would have to go over the counter for Nicolas Cage to have the opportunity to comment in a “Massive Talent” sequel that his hoped-for success project first failed, but then a heroic one in home cinema made a comeback. It would have deserved it, as you can see from our review:
