While season 4 of “New Amsterdam” is currently being broadcast in the United States, fans of the medical series have discovered the tragic fate of one of the key characters.
A new tragedy has struck the doctors of New Amsterdam. In episode 13 of season 4, broadcast last night in the United States, they indeed learned of the death of one of their own: doctor Vijay Kapoor, played since the launch of the series in 2018 by Anupam Kher.
While Max (Ryan Eggold) and Helen (Freema Agyeman) are in the middle of an argument, the latter receives a phone call that seems to upset her deeply. The viewer then guesses that something very serious has happened, without yet understanding what really happened. The mystery is lifted at the very end of the episode when the doctors all gather around Ella to support her in the face of the death of Doctor Vijay Kapoor.
As sad as it is, this departure is not really a surprise for New Amsterdam fans. Last April, Anupam Kher announced that he would not return to season 3 of the medical series for personal reasons.
The Hindustan Times revealed at the time that the actor’s wife, Kirron Kher, was undergoing treatment for blood cancer. A test which probably explains his desire to move away from the sets for a while.
Vijay Kapoor’s last appearance in New Amsterdam dates from the start of season 3, which aired in the United States in March 2021. He was indeed present in the first two episodes, which were actually sequences from the episode of the season 2 never aired, entitled Pandemic, in which Kapoor fell ill, the victim of a violent epidemic of deadly flu.
In episode 7 of the third season, Iggy (Tyler Labine) learned that Vijay Kapoor had resigned from the hospital following his fight against Covid, an open heart operation, and a long period of rehabilitation which had prevented him to resume his position as head of the neurology department.
For the moment, the exact reasons for his death have not yet been revealed, the most plausible hypothesis being that he succumbed to side effects of his illness.
In France, the first episodes of season 3 were broadcast on TF1, before the channel decided to cancel the series last December.
