Available on Netflix, “Mother / Android” with Chloë Grace Moretz tells the story of a young mother’s journey to give birth to her child when robots have taken over Earth. However, it is a tragic event that inspired the film.
An anticipatory tale, Mother / Android offers a chilling worldview in which humans use androids as servants. One evening, when the Christmas holidays are in full swing, a short circuit causes chaos. Mechanical slaves turn on their masters, who have no choice but to flee.
A few minutes before the drama, Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) learns that she is pregnant. Nine months later, the young woman hides in the woods with her boyfriend (Algee Smith) to escape the out of control machines. Together, they want to reach Boston in the hope of being able to deliver the child safely.
If the film falls purely in science fiction, with many tributes to Terminator, it is the director’s past that inspired this crazy story. Mattson Tomlin directs, with Mother / Android, his first feature film. A feature film that he describes as a “love letter to his parents”.
A PERSONAL STORY
Coming straight from Romania, the filmmaker was born a year after the coup d’état and the numerous riots that shook his country. As in his own film, his parents separated from him to give him a better future. He was subsequently adopted by an American family. “The baby of Mother / Android, it’s me”, He explains in an interview with Collider.
“I didn’t want to adapt this story head-on, he continues. I was born after the Romanian revolution and I imagined that I was going to turn it into a revolution of robots. ” The opportunity for the director to mix genres and offer a personal story mixed with an adventure likely to attract a large audience.
Although the last minutes of Mother / Android leave a bitter taste, Mattson Tomlin specifies that his life is not all about “a sad end”. “There is a lot of personal suffering, but also a lot of beauty”.
