Following an SNL skit that makes fun of movies that are too long, Netflix has launched a “short ass movies” category with only short films of around 1:30.
Short films to watch on Netflix
There have always been very long films. We even offered you on the occasion of the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League a list of excellent movies over 4 hours. But more and more we see Hollywood coming out blockbusters with imposing durations. As Avengers: Endgame (2019) and it’s 3:01, or more recently The Batman which lasts 2h57! It must be said that the studios understood that the impact on the box office was not so negative. Despite a decrease in the number of sessions, the scores are still more impressive.
However, short films can also be very valuable. The proof with the new category “short ass movies” proposed by Netflix and which only contains films of about 1h30. While one would imagine finding only comedies there, all genres are in fact present. The superhero movie with Hancock (1h32), the French drama with In the name of my daughter (1h26), the science fiction film with a jumper (1h28), or the zombie comedy with Welcome to Zombieland (1h27) without forgetting the horror with the hostel (1h33).
The platform was inspired by an SNL sketch
A pretty good idea that actually comes from an SNL skit. During the famous American show Pete Davidson, Chris Redd, Simon Rex, and Gunna kindly mocked the excessive length of certain films. After displaying their desire to watch instead “a short ass movie like Bambi“, they launched into an improbable and hilarious rap in favor of these “little films”.
Netflix, therefore, noticed this sketch and took the opportunity to follow through with their idea by offering this “short ass movies” category. From now on, you won’t be able to say that you don’t have time to watch a movie.
