Squid Game is THE phenomenon of the end of 2021 on Netflix. But what does the title of the South Korean series mean? Squid Game (“the squid game” in French) refers to a game played by young Korean children in the 1970s, a pastime that we discover at the start of the first episode of the show with geometric shapes drawn on the ground (square, triangle, circle) representing the schematic shape of a squid. The game ends when one of the attackers enters the circular area. Defenders, on the other hand, have the task of getting their opponents out of the playing area.
the Squid Game plays both on the tactical spirit of its players but also on their physical strength. Above all, it has a competitive aspect taken to the extreme (the one who loses being considered dead), the ideal symbol of a social satire for the creator of the series Hwang Dong Hyeo.
“The squid game is a game I used to play when I was a kid, in the schoolyard or in the streets of my neighborhood”, says Hwang Dong Hyeo at the microphone of RadioTimes. “It was one of the most physical games ever and also one of my favorites. I felt it could be the most symbolic child’s game to represent the kind of society in which we live today. “
