Halle Berry will return to the horror genre by collaborating with Alexandre Aja for the film “Motherland”. The actress will take on the main role, a mother tormented by a horrible evil spirit…
Halle Berry and horror
Since the beginning of her career, Halle Berry has been accustomed to surveying all possible and unimaginable genres. From drama (In the shadow of hate for which she received an Oscar) to action (saga X-Men and John Wick) to comedy (Bullworth), the actress has often marked the spirits by her eclecticism. However, she also distinguished herself in the horror genre. Thus, we could see it in the film Gothikadirected by Matthieu Kassovitz in 2004. A few years later, it is in the horror thriller The Call let’s find her.
These last years, Halle Berry has distinguished herself above all as a producer and director. Indeed, in 2020, she is directing her first feature film entitled bruised. For this year 2022, we find her on the poster of the SF film Moonfalldirected by Rolland Emmerich.
Last year, while the world was still fighting hard against the COVID-19 pandemic, Alexandre Aja released a claustrophobic film on Netflix entitled Oxygen. With this feature film, the French director thus recalled his immense talent for the horror genre which made him stand out among the general public with productions such as high tension and The Hills Have Eyes.
For his new production entitled MotherlandAja will collaborate again with Lionsgate, a few years after the film Crawl. He will therefore direct Halle Berry in this feature film in which the actress will play the main role. Motherland will follow a mother and her twin sons who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years. When one of the boys wonders if the evil is real, the sacred family bond is shattered, and it becomes a struggle for survival.
Note that, according to TheWrap, the film will be written by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby. It will be executive produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine, among others, with Halle Berry and Holly Jeter serving as executive producers.
President Erin Westerman of Lionsgate, in any case, declared in her press release her joy of working with Halle Berry and Alexandre Aja:
We are delighted to be working with Halle and Alex again. Halle is a force on screen, she is the perfect person to convey the psychological terror of this mother trying to protect her family. And who better than Alex to raise the tension.
The production of Motherland should start in 2023.
