After just three seasons, it will soon be time to say goodbye to “Star Trek: Picard“. For the finale, however, the makers bring up a few more things. It has been known for some time that the new season will finally bring us a full-fledged revival of the cult series “Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century” (aka “Star Trek: The Next Generation”).
So there will be a reunion with all (!) continuous main actors and actresses from “Next Generation”. Joining guest stars Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Data) are LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), Michael Dorn (Worf) and Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher). “Picard” debut.
But that’s not all: As already rumored and now confirmed in the trailer above, the Enterprise will also celebrate its comeback in the third season of “Picard”! However, this is no longer about the Enterprise E, which was still in the last “Next Generation” movie “Star Trek: Nemesis” sped through space, but the successor model, the Enterprise F, the hardcore Trekkies already from the video game “Star Trek online”. Whether the ship will be commanded by Andorian Va’Kel Shon, as in the game, or perhaps by longtime Enterprise e-captain (and newly minted pacifist?) Worf is unclear.
But even that doesn’t stop the surprises in the new “Picard” trailer. So fans can apparently also look forward to the return of the hologram of Sherlock Holmes adversary James Moriarty (Daniel Davis)., originally designed by Geordi as a worthy foe for Data, but later gaining consciousness and seizing control of the Enterprise in order to find a way out of the holodeck. Using a trick to make him believe he’d done it, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew finally defeated him. Should he now have discovered the truth, he shouldn’t exactly be on good terms with the ex-Enterprise captain.
And last but not least, the preview above also shows the new old role of “Star Trekveteran Brent Spiner reveals he’ll likely step into the shoes of Data’s evil twin brother, Lore, once again, which was created many years ago as Data’s predecessor and equipped with emotions – which, however, led it down a dark path. Again and again he made life difficult for his brother and his comrades-in-arms – until he was actually deactivated and dismantled once and for all. As he now in “Star Trek: Picard’ returns remains to be seen.
However, the great danger in the final third season seems to come from someone else: For the first time in the trailer, we see the mysterious Vadic, played by “Pulp Fiction” star Amanda Plummer, who seeks bitter revenge on Picard and seems willing to do anything to get them. What exactly is the reason for this Vendetta is not yet revealed – but after the many revelations in the new trailer there are still a few surprises for the episodes themselves. We don’t have to wait too long for these either:
The third “Star Trek: Picard”-Season starts on February 16, 2023 on the US streaming service Paramount +, the big series finale will then rise there on April 20. However, the situation in Germany is still somewhat uncertain. Thanks to a deal with Amazon, episodes from the first two seasons have always been available a day after their US premiere on Amazon Prime Video (where the series is even somewhat misleadingly called the Amazon Original).

However, the actual original “Picard” home Paramount+ will also start in this country at the end of 2022, which is why it could be that season 3 will only appear there exclusively (and possibly also seasons 1 and 2 will migrate from Prime Video). We should find out at some point in the next few months whether this will really be the case.
“Star Trek: Picard’ will definitely come to an end in 2023. However, it could be that we still don’t have to say goodbye to Picard, Riker and Co. for good. There are currently increasing indications that a film with the “Next Generation” crew could possibly await us (it would be the fifth overall). Patrick Stewart alluded to this possibility at New York Comic Con, where the new “Picard” trailer celebrated its world premiere. And Riker actor Jonathan Frakes also announced on Twitter that the upcoming adventure might not be as final as previously thought.
In fact, this would also be a possibility to use the “Star Trek” to revive the franchise in the film sector after a long break. A long-planned fourth deployment of the younger Enterprise crew from the Kelvin timeline was recently canceled after an announcement, at least for the time being:
