“The father of the bride” is called Billy Herrera (Andy Garcia) and he is a successful architect from Cuba who fulfilled his American dream in Miami. In his private life, however, things are not going as well for him as in business. Because his wife Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) wants to announce the divorce from the workaholic and this intention as soon as possible to their children Sofia (Adria Arjona) and Cora (Isabela Merced).
But Sofia herself has a surprise for her parents: the law student has become engaged to her fellow student Adan (Diego Boneta). The couple intends to marry immediately and then move closer to the groom’s family in Mexico. Conservative family man Billy is shocked. However, he hides his feelings and tries by all means to keep Ingrid’s separation plans secret.
Instead, he wants to organize a big, traditional Cuban wedding for Sofia. When she refuses such a spectacle, the bride’s father has to improvise. However, he struggles to get a grip on his injured pride as a husband and father, his mistrust of Adan and his inferiority complex towards his father, the Mexican beer magnate Hernan (Pedro Damian).
