Slowly but surely, Sony is starting to develop its extended universe around the figures related to Spider-Man. After “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, Jared Leto will be headlining “Morbius”, the film about the blood-drinking anti-hero. The director has just announced the cameo of an important character.
After Venom, comes Morbius’ turn
Since we heard about it, the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters has not yet proven much. Multiple projects are on fire but we remain with this impression that the machine is moving at idle speed. We will hear from him on October 20 with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In a world that would not have known the pandemic, Morbius would already be released during the summer of 2020.
Pushed back to January 19, 2022, the film directed by Daniel Espinosa will introduce Jared Leto in the skin of the vampire who lends his name to the title. Stricken by a serious and rare blood disease, the brilliant Dr. Morbius sets out to find a cure for the ailment that affects him. As a result of his experiments which he conducts on himself, he will transform into a being thirsty for blood. Equipped with new abilities, he will become a complex anti-hero. Like Venom, Sony wants to present a character torn between Good and Evil.
Morbius is a new founding stone of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, pending the arrival of Spider-Man which is due to take place after the release of No Way Home. A connected whole must be put in place, with very likely help from the multiverse. Sony allows itself to keep the incarnation of Tom Holland and will be able to take advantage of what has been put in place by Marvel / Disney +. We also know that Morbius will relate to Spider-Man: Homecoming because Michael Keaton will take over the costume of the Vulture.
The beginnings of an extended universe
Another very important character from the Spider-Man universe will have a head in the film. Daniel Espinosa revealed during an interview with MovieZine (via The Direct) that Tom Hardy was in the credits:
When you walk around the set it looks like a Swedish production, but when you watch the show and read names like Michael Keaton, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, then it’s cool and very exciting.
A previous photo had proven that Venom and Morbius shared the same universe, but there was nothing to say with certainty that Tom Hardy would be visible in the film. Since we are used to large universes, the surprise is only partial. We don’t expect big screen time for Venom / Eddie Brock but more to a cameo. In a post-credits scene, for example.
