REVIEW / FILM REVIEW – After the two films directed by Chris Columbus, Disney has decided to produce a remake of “Mom, I Missed the Plane” for its Disney + streaming platform.
Mom I missed the plane : Disney attacks remakes
In 1990, filmmaker Chris Columbus, who previously directed Crazy night, is about to realize his first popular success. Indeed, the filmmaker stages the excellent Mom I missed the plane, a Christmas comedy that has become a cult. The movie is two-time Oscar nominee and bring back more than $ 476 million in box office revenue for a budget of $ 18 million. Sacred gains for the 20th Century Fox who decides to launch the production of a sequel two years later. Chris Columbus returns behind the camera and the young Macaulay Culkin is once again the hero of the story.
Now that Fox is owned by Disney, many cult movie remakes will land either in theaters or on Disney +. And this Mom, I missed the plane (it’s starting again) is only the first step of this reconditioning. This new version, directed by Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa, English wedding), sees little Archie Yates (Jojo rabbit) take Macaulay Culkin’s place, whileEllie Kemper and Rob Delaney replace unforgettable Breakers Floats. And while this new version is not shameful, she clearly does not bring anything new. On the contrary, it refers to a terrible observation: Disney’s limitless opportunism to make remakes.
It starts again, but worse
Mom I missed the plane (it’s starting again) is not the much-advertised flop, and remains a sometimes effective entertainment. Unfortunately, this new version, modernized for a new generation of spectators, does not add much more to the two films of Chris Columbus. It must be said that this new vision is a bland copy and paste from the original movie, less successful. Already, Archie Yates is less endearing than Macaulay Culkin. And this, despite all his efforts. The young actor is less convincing in the skin of Max than the Kevin of our time.
The same goes with Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney. Even if the two actors go to great lengths in the shoes of these improvised robbers, it is difficult to reach the cult dimension of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern in the shoes of the Breakers Flotteurs. However, the duo does not work on the screen, offers the best comic springs of the film and remains the sole interest of this sequel / remake.
Young audience objective
Staging, much more simplistic than that of Chris Columbus, worried about the degree of requirement of Disney concerning its products coming to Disney +. Closer to the TV movie than to the cinema movie, Mom I missed the plane (it’s starting again) suggests that the Disney platform is a bit of a catch-all bit picky about its productions. Finally, the feature film obviously tries to connect to the two Columbus classics. And if Macaulay Culkin refused to return to Kevin’s shoes despite repeated requests from Disney, Kevin McCallister’s older brother Devin Ratray aka Buzz makes an appearance in new installment. Enough to purr a little nostalgia for a lost time.
Mom I missed the plane (it’s starting again) therefore never invents anything, and is distinguished above all by his laziness, whether in writing or staging. Rest them ingredients that made the success of the original films which should entertain a young audience not too demanding for the Christmas holidays.
