Kevin McCallister and the breakers meet in New York in “Mom, I missed the plane again”. On the set of this sequel, Joe Pesci was not very kind to Macaulay Culkin.
Mom, I missed the plane again : Kevin McCallister arrives in New York
Two years after the success of Mom I missed the plane, the film crew reformed in 1992. For this soberly titled sequel Mom, I missed the plane again in France, Chris Columbus is once again directing. John Hugues resumes his posts as screenwriter and producer. Macaulay Culkin is obviously making his comeback in the cult role of Kevin McCallister. Finally, the rest of the cast of the first opus is also at the rendezvous.
This time, young Kevin does not find himself stranded at home due to a failure of the alarm clock. The little boy is indeed part of the family convoy on the way to Florida for the Christmas holidays. But in the halls of the airport, he mistakes his father Peter (John Heard) for another man. In a rush, he accidentally gets on the wrong plane.
After landing, Kevin realizes he’s in New York. Enough to allow him to enjoy a luxurious stay away from his family at the Plaza, a stone’s throw from Central Park. However, the hero does not expect to meet Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) again, the breakers, fresh out of prison and determined to take revenge.
Catherine O’Hara, Tim Curry, Brenda Fricker, Rob Schneider, Devin Ratray and Kieran Culkin complete the cast of this second installment, in which Kevin makes new enemies but also new allies in the immense arteries of Manhattan.
When Joe Pesci bully Macaulay Culkin
At the heart of this playground of unlimited possibilities, Kevin McCallister sets up many traps for float breakers, especially in the toy store Duncan’s Toy Chest. In order for the opposition between the young hero and his two opponents to work perfectly on screen, Joe Pesci does not do Macaulay Culkin a favor on the set.
In order to arouse mistrust and fear of the boy, the Oscar winner for The Freedmen – who is inspired by Sam the pirate for his cartoonish composition – already preferred to ignore it outside of the shots of the first feature film. Passing on the set of Conan O’Brien in 2004, Macaulay Culkin says that he also really bit his finger during a confrontation, which left him a scar.
During the preparation of this sequel, Joe Pesci does not soften his behavior. A technique that works, since Macaulay Culkin does not find him very likeable. While filming Mom, I missed the plane again, he even goes so far as to ask Harry’s interpreter why he never smiles. What the actor would have answered, quoted by The Independent :
Shut your mouth !
Joe Pesci would later have explained about his reaction, according to NME :
He (Macaulay Culkin) is hugely pampered by a lot of people, but not by me, and I think he enjoys it.
The young star is indeed “pampered”, since she would have touched $ 4.5 million for Mom, I missed the plane again according to IMDb, breaking the record for the highest-paid eleven-year-old comedian in Hollywood history.
