The popular animated film debuted at the American box office at the top.
Universal and Illumination animation “Minions 2: The Rise of Gru” topped the US box office with an opening gross of $108.5 million. Industry reports predicted the movie’s first weekend gross of $70 million, but Minions far exceeded expectations. The movie’s box office is expected to approach $128 million over the 4-day holiday, which includes July 4, Independence Day.
“Minions 2: The Rise of Gru” thus became the highest-grossing animated film at the US box office since “Frozen 2” in 2019. The movie grossed $7 million behind the first “Minions” movie of 2015.
