2022 is a big year for Miles Teller, who plays an important role in “Top Gun : Maverick” and the main role of “Spiderhead”, two films directed by Joseph Kosinski. A great recognition for the American actor, who was refused several roles in his debut because of the scars that bar his left cheek.
Miles Teller, scars that delayed his career
Active in cinema since 2010 and the film Rabbit Hole by John Cameron Mitchell, Miles Teller reveals himself entirely with whiplash by Damien Chazelle in 2014. Since then, he has chained roles with various successes, before finally getting everyone to agree this year with his role in the box Top Gun : Maverick. Now in full light, it will have escaped no one that his left cheek is streaked with scarsand that others are also visible on his chin.
By his own admission, these scars have long kept him from landing roles. As he said in 2016 in the show “Popcorn With Peter Travers”, her appearance initially put off the casting directors and directors.
When I started doing auditions, people were like, ‘Yes, Miles is a good actor, but it doesn’t make sense for the character to have scars.’ At first, my scars were pretty scary.
We would have had to wait Rabbit Hole in 2010, and its director John Cameron Mitchell justly seduced by these scars, so that they become a strength rather than a weakness. These are therefore very real, and are the memory of a tragic accident from which Miles Teller fortunately survived.
A terrible car accident when he was only twenty years old
As Miles Teller told in this interview, he was twenty years old and was at university when he was the victim of a very serious car accident. While he was a passenger in a car driven by a friend, the latter lost control of the vehicle at 130 km/h. The car rolled over eight times and ejected Miles Teller more than fifteen meters. Badly battered, he says his friends thought for a moment that he was dead. Fortunately, he survived the accident, but his face is seriously injured.
It took several painful operations spread over four years to reduce these scars as much as possible. But as the actor states, he still has two small pieces of asphalt stuck under his skin, the removal of which would have caused more scarring. Rather than trying to hide them at all costs, Miles Teller has therefore chosen to assume them, and like Tommy Flanagan, these scars have become an identity and a strength.
When we discover the origin of these scars, we cannot help but think of Spiderheadthriller by Joseph Kosinski – director of Top Gun : Maverickin which the character played by Miles Teller also survives a violent car accident. Very close to Joseph Kosinski, with whom he has now collaborated on three films (line of fire in 2016, in addition to Top Gun : Maverick and Spiderhead), it’s a safe bet that this element of Spiderhead was brought in by Miles Teller from personal experience.
