The film “Sage femme” by Martin Provost features Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot. But is it based on a true story? Discover the poignant testimony of the director.
Midwife: Deneuve and Frot play the role
The film midwife with Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot was released in cinemas in March 2017. Directed by Martin Provost, it had a great career in theaters with more than 700,000 spectators in total.
Claire is righteousness itself. Midwife, she dedicated her life to others. Already preoccupied by the upcoming closure of her maternity ward, she sees her life turned upside down by the return of Béatrice, former mistress of her deceased father, a whimsical and selfish woman, her exact opposite.
A true story as inspiration
When the film was released in theaters, director Martin Provost said that the idea for the script was born from a very personal story. That of his birth.
Indeed, he confided that he was saved by a midwife, who gave him her blood, and allowed him to live. When his mother told him the truth about this story, he went looking for her, in vain.
So I decided to pay tribute to her in my own way and to dedicate this film to her, and through her, to dedicate it to all those women who work in the shadows, dedicating their lives to others, without ever expecting anything in return. .
Martin Provost also confided that it was this midwife who declared it to the town hall:
I had almost just finished editing the film and to my amazement I discovered that it was her, and not my father, who had declared me to the town hall. Not only had she spent the whole night with me, she had saved me, but she had gone to declare me, as if to certify that I was safe and sound. I find this gesture magnificent, and her name, Yvonne André, I repeat to myself constantly. I owe him a lot.
However, the director clarified that the film was not autobiographical. That he had above all wanted to come into contact with a profession which had always fascinated. To better understand the subject, he spent a lot of time in the company of real midwives to shape the character of Claire.
