After The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan returns with a new horror series, Midnight Sermons or Midnight Mass in the original version. And the trailer seems to live up to the expectation.
After an intriguing first trailer, Midnight Sermons is revealed a little more in the one that Netflix has just released. Mike Flanagan, the creator of the excellent horror series The Haunting of Hill House, tells the story of a small, isolated and strained island community.
These are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man, played by Zach Gilford, and the arrival of a charismatic and scheming priest, played by Hamish Linklater. But when Father Paul’s appearance on the island coincides with unexplained and apparently miraculous events, a religious fervor seizes the community. But a question arises: do these miracles come at a price?
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Mike Flanagan explained that he was brought up in the Catholic religion and served as an altar boy. Its story strongly inspired the establishment. “It is not just about Catholicism, it is about the traditions of all our religions, especially those dating back to the ancient world“, explained the creator.
“The ancient world was a bloody, violent, and terrifying place where we didn’t understand nature or time, or whether we would survive night or season. And every natural function of the planet could be interpreted as a supernatural attack.“
“It is impossible to separate the Bible, as a book, from the horror literature. Everything is there“, he continues.”It openly and shamelessly espouses supernatural and horrific events. Even the hero of the story – God, the embodiment of love – drowns the world when he gets angry enough in the Old Testament.“
A priori, Midnight Sermons therefore aims to explore fanaticism and extremism, but again through the prism of horror. Mike Flanagan has also published a few photos on his Instagram account that reflect the anxiety-provoking atmosphere that promises to embrace the viewer:
