In 2022, Microsoft’s video game branch has a lot of things going on. The American giant must indeed take care of the Xbox Series X | S, the Xbox Game Pass, its games offered on Steam as well as its cloud gaming system. These priorities, combined with the production problems encountered by the Xbox Series X | S, made Microsoft decide to retire the Xbox One.
Microsoft has just confirmed that it has stopped production of Xbox One. And that this shutdown took place over a year ago. This is the site The verge which relays this information. The latter obtained it directly from Microsoft, and more specifically from Cindy Walker, director of marketing for Xbox consoles:
By the end of 2020, we had stopped production of all Xbox One in order to focus on the production of Xbox Series X | S.
Xbox One S or the Last of the Mohicans
Released in November 2013 in North America and Europe, the Xbox One therefore had a 7-year cycle. FYI, the Xbox One S was the last model still produced at the end of 2020.
Indeed, Microsoft had stopped production of the original Xbox One when the Xbox One S was released in the summer of 2016. And it was in the summer of 2020 that production of the Xbox One X ended as well as that of the Xbox One S All Digital.
A generation almost over
It is thus in the greatest discretion that the career of the Xbox One ended. Even though games continue to be released on Xbox One, it is now possible to say that it is one of the dead consoles.
To finish, let us recall for comparison that Sony has formalized its intention to continue producing PS4s in 2022. As we explained to you yesterday, this is a way for the Japanese manufacturer to deal with different levels of its own PS5 production problems.
Are you surprised that Microsoft has already stopped production of Xbox One consoles? Do you think this machine got the career it deserved? Do you think Microsoft should have announced this? Give us your opinion in the comments below.
