Announcement after announcement, Microids continues to resuscitate with a wave of a magic wand licenses that were thought to belong to a distant and illustrious video game past. Today: the brick breaker!
Last September, the French signed a “historic” agreement with the developer Taito, with a view to producing two new “cultural products” scheduled for next year. Our beloved editor-in-chief then wondered what illustrious license of the house catalog would benefit from a new youth, not without citing a certain Arkanoid, in order to be once again more visionary. Which class. The teasing started yesterday on a so-called social network no longer left too much doubt about the next announcement:
A brick in the pond
Microids is therefore announcing today the release of Arkanoid Eternal Battle in 2022. This revised and corrected version of the cult brick breaker of the year 1986 still retains many mysteries about its specificities, but we already know that this redesign will be provided by the Parisians of Pastagames, to whom we owe the very neo-retro Pix the Cat, Pang Adventures, and more recently Pac-Man Party Royale. Suffice to say that the guys know a little about gaming antiques. Microids also promises a single player but also a multiplayer mode, obvious given the subtitle of this new episode.
Studio director Fabien Delpiano confirms this by recalling some memories of the time:
For me, it was in Nice, at number 54 Boulevard Jean Médecin, in a dark arcade, “Automat”, full of flashing neon lights, swarming with a motley population, from biker to schoolboy. It was so beautiful this terminal, with its metal paddle on ball bearings, I dragged my fifteen years as I could. We liked each other right away, and our relationship lasted for years. We all have our history with Arkanoid. It feels so good to meet again, after all these years.
On target ?
For now, only a logo, a name and an enigmatic teaser will offer some semblance of material to gloss specialists, who can obviously share their craziest theories with us in the comments below. While waiting to learn a little more about Arkanoid Eternal Battle, announced for 2022, let’s give the floor to the director of Taito, Masakazu Suzuki:
We are delighted to collaborate with Microids on this revamped and updated version of a cult Taito title released 35 years ago. We have full confidence in them and are convinced that the game will appeal to new players as much as to those who are just starting out.
