The “Matrix Resurrections” trailer has just been released online. And this trailer has already caused a lot of ink to flow. But one question remains: why do Neo and Trinity not recognize each other when they meet?
Matrix 4 : big expectation for the fans
The first opus of the saga Matrix is considered by many to be a huge masterpiece. In 1999, Lana Wachowski and Lilly Washowski sign one of the greatest sci-fi films of the decade. Worn by Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne or Carrie-Anne Moss, Matrix meets a monstrous success. It must be said that the duo offers an ambitious science fiction film, which depicts an alternative society where each individual is controlled by the Matrix, and ultimately has no free will. At the time, the feature film wins four Oscars (Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects). On the box office side, Matrix brings back more than $ 466 million in revenue for a budget of 63 million.
Faced with this triumph, Warner decides to produce two sequels, both released in 2003. Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions report more than one billion dollars in box office revenue. Almost twenty years later, Lana Wachowski, who this time operates solo, decides to make a fourth opus: Matrix Resurrections. For the occasion, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back in front of the camera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II takes Laurence Fishburne’s place as Morpheus, while Neil Patrick Harris joins the franchise. The work is expected for the December 15, 2021.
A trailer that raises many questions
The Warner unveiled yesterday September 9 the first trailer of Matrix Resurrections. Superb and very exciting images that have already generated a lot of ink. Those who have seen the first three films know that Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have a close relationship, and get to know each other inside out. However, in the trailer for Matrix Resurrections, the two protagonists seem to have forgotten their common past. They don’t recognize each other when they pass each other in a restaurant.
The trailer suggests that the two heroes have had their memory erased. Only a line refers to their past when Trinity asks Neo if they haven’t already crossed paths. And there is a fairly simple theory to explain this state of affairs.

In the first Matrix, Morpheus offers Neo two pills. The famous red and blue pills. The blue allows him to erase his memory and continue living as if nothing had happened in the matrix while the red allows him to free his mind and really see the world around him. Obviously, the protagonist chooses the red pill, the starting point for his demented adventures. Ultimately, the Wachowski sisters never actually developed the blue pills.
Matrix Resurrections will therefore be the first part of the franchise to address the operation of these blue drugs. In the trailer, Neo appears to be taking a fairly high amount of blue pills on a regular basis. Which implies that Neo would rather stay in the womb and take this treatment to keep his mind under control. Although the reason for this addiction to the blue pills is not yet known, it seems pretty obvious that these are prescribed by the character of Neil Patric Harris, obviously Neo’s psychologist. In this way, it is highly likely that Neo’s memories were obscured, as were those of Trinity. Logically, the two characters will have to free themselves from this drug control to become the badass heroes of the first films again. Answer this winter!
