The first images of Matrix 4 have finally fallen, and with them their share of questions. While Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, Laurence Fishburne in Morpheus is not. Who replaces him?
At last ! After many months of waiting, the trailer for Matrix Resurrections has finally been released. We find with pleasure Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in Neo and Trinity with many references to the first part, in particular the famous blue and red pills.
If the two emblematic characters of the saga are present, a third also points the tip of his round glasses, the mythical Morpheus. Incarnated by Laurence Fishburne in the Wachowski trilogy, he is replaced here by Yahya Abdul-Mateen.
If we already knew that the American actor was playing in Matrix 4, his precise role was not entirely clear. The doubts are now raised, it fits well in the costume of Morpheus. But is this really a younger version of the character or rather an alternate version generated by a new matrix? The first images remain deliberately obscure on this point.
After once again offering Neo the choice of taking the blue or red pill, Morpheus leads his sidekick into a training room, as in the first opus. Neo seems confused and calls out to Morpheus: “You do not know me”, he said to him. “Is that so ?”, retorts his interlocutor with a smirk.
Warner Neo VS Morpheus, the return
So it seems clear that while the fighter’s face has changed, his mind remains the same. Indeed, one has the impression that he is trying to make Neo recover his memory. In any case, Yahya Abdul-Mateen seems to camp a perfect Morpheus by focusing on the performance of his illustrious elder, Laurence Fishburne. The latter, now 60, was 38 when The Matrix was filmed in 1999. Yahya, 35, is therefore perfectly in the age group to play the younger character.
However, the mystery remains, if Morpheus has not aged, why is Neo and Trinity so? The answer will surely be provided in the feature film, scheduled for December 15 in theaters.

Warner Blue pill or red pill?
As a reminder, Yahya Abdul-Mateen was revealed in the series The Get Down before exploding in the eyes of the general public by playing the villainous Black Manta in Aquaman. He also appeared in Watchmen, The Chicago Seven and the recent Candyman, in theaters on September 29. After Matrix 4, we can find him in Furiosa, the prequel to Mad Max Fury Road.
