“Matrix Resurrections” hits theaters on December 22, but the film has already been shown to the press. The first opinions fell on social networks. And not surprisingly, there are very different opinions there.
The Matrix Resurrection
In 1999 the Wachowskis turned our brains over with the brilliant Matrix. From this first opus, the duo put us in our eyes with mythical action sequences based on bullet time and challenged reality by making our world a virtual simulation called the “Matrix”. Two sequels arrived in 2003 to form an exciting and complex trilogy despite obvious flaws. Almost 20 years later, the saga returns with Matrix Resurrections, a fourth film directed this time only by Lana Wachowski.

So it’s Neo’s return, years after the events of Matrix Revolutions. For the occasion, Keanu reeves reprise her role, as does Carrie-Anne Moss in Trinity. Regarding Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne leaves his place to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. An astonishing choice, but well and truly justified in this Matrix 4.
The first press reviews
The film was shown to the French press and abroad. After the end of the embargo, the first returns could appear on social networks (while waiting for the critics, they, still under embargo). And the least we can say is that opinions diverge. For some, the film is a success, faithful to the saga, not necessarily perfect and on course to divide, but a great film all the same.
For others, in France as in the United States, this Matrix 4 falls too much into fan-service with lots of warmed-up ideas.
Some are even more negative, like this journalist who finds too long and silly exposure with too jerky action scenes like the movies Jason bourne.
Action is also questioned here, as well as the thinness of the characters despite the interest of the metacharacter of the film.
Finally, for Scott Menzel, Matrix 4 is simply “one of the most disappointing films of the year“. The journalist sees it as “a mess that tarnishes the legacy of the franchise“, in particular, because of”a story that makes no sense“.
