Matilda: what becomes of actress Mara Wilson?

Mara Wilson: the child star of the 90s

Born July 24, 1987 in Los Angeles, Mara Wilson made an impression in the 1990s. Indeed, the young actress appears in three cult films of this decade: Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993, Miracle on 34th Street in 1994, and Matilda in 1996. In the latter, directed by Danny DeVito, she plays the main character. A gifted little girl with magical powers, born in the wrong family and rejected by the principal of her school. Very quickly, she uses her telekinesis to find her place and finally be accepted.

The film is an adaptation of eponymous novel by Roald Dahl published in 1988. For her performance, Mara Wilson was awarded the YoungStar Award in 1997. She was then only 10 years old.

What becomes of the young actress of Matilda?

While her career seemed launched, she gradually disappears from the screens after the release of Matilda. In 1997, she starred in the film Fairy war then only made a few appearances in TV series. In 2016, she lent her voice to a character from BoJack Horseman for 4 episodes.

Now 34 years old, Mara Wilson is now devoting herself to a career as a writer. In 2016, she published a book called Where Am I Now? : True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame in which she reflects on her years of celebrity, and how it affected her as a child.

In an interview from 2016, she explained that after Matilda, she felt the need to get away from film sets because of a certain weariness.

If she has disappeared from the screens, Mara Wilson is nevertheless very present on social networks, especially on Instagram, where she shares her daily life. Last March, she posted a video of herself, making a surprise to Daisy Ridley in an interview. Rey’s interpreter in Star wars had confided that Matilda was his favorite movie …
