At one time, excluded from a big Marvel project, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) thought he was fired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He returned to this troubled period of his life.
Chris Hemsworth kicked out of the Marvel Universe? This is what the interpreter of the god Thor feared in the MCU. Indeed, there was a time in 2015 when everyone was only talking about an upcoming movie, Captain America: Civil War, in which it was not. As a result, Hemsworth felt excluded from it all.
In the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor looks back on this period that troubled him:
I remember during the promotion of Avengers: Age of Ultron, everyone was talking about Civil War. And I was like, “What is Civil War?”, “Are you making a movie in your corner?”
And when told that Civil War refers to Captain America’s third adventure, Hemsworth understands even less:
“But wait, is Iron Man in it?”, he asked, before being answered: “Yes, but it’s not just Iron Man, there’s also Vision (Paul Bettany), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) … [Marvel] said you had your own stuff “.” At this moment, the actor thinks: “That’s it, I was kicked out of history.”
It’s true that at the time, everyone was wondering what Thor was going to do in his third solo adventure. But he wasn’t the only Avenger sidelined in Civil War, as Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) was too. Nobody imagined then – not even themselves – that they were going to shoot a feature film together: Thor: Ragnarok.
To titillate fans who wondered what Thor was doing during the events of the Civil War, Ragnarok director Taika Waititi even signed a series of humorous short films showing Thor living a normal life among humans:
Hemsworth’s fears about his place in the MCU were unfounded, however. The first two Thors had grossed $ 1.04 billion, whereas Captain America 1 and 2 were at 1.08 billion, or more or less the same. There is therefore no danger on the box office side that one eclipses the other or that Hemsworth’s performance is called into question.
Since Ragnarok, Thor is even one of the most comedic characters in the MCU, with a strong repartee and unmistakable charisma. We will always find him with the face of Chris Hemsworth but also that of Natalie Portman in Thor: Love and Thunder, scheduled for July 13, 2022, in theaters.
