The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards were presented on Monday evening, September 12, 2022 in Los Angeles. This is now not only the most important prize in the television industry, but also in streaming services. Last year, the three biggest awards – Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series and Best Mini-Series – went to streaming services: “The Crown” (Netflix), “Ted Lasso’ (Apple TV+) and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ (Netflix).
This year counts “Ted Lasso’ again among the big winners, as the award for Best Comedy Series repeatedly went to the Apple format. In the Best Drama Series category, “Succession’ (HBO/HBO Max), while ‘The White Lotus’ won Best Mini-Series (also HBO/HBO Max). By the way, HBO also had the most wins this year: namely 26 pieces. That sounds decent (and it is), but last year Netflix got a whopping 44 (!) Emmys.
This year, Netflix has to settle for second place with 23 Emmys, while Disney+ has won 9, Hulu 8, and Amazon Prime Video 6 Emmys. Meanwhile, AppleTV+ received 5 Emmys, four of which went to “Ted Lasso’ were presented.
This year’s top acting awards went to Jason Sudeikis for Best Comedy Lead Actor (“Ted Lasso”), Jean Smart for Best Comedy Lead Actress (“Hacks”), Lee Jung-jae for Best Drama Lead Actor (“Squid Game”), and Zendaya for Best Drama Lead Actress (“Euphoria”). 26-year-old Zendaya is the youngest-ever winner of two Leading Actor Emmys, having won the 2020 award for “Euphoria“. Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”) and Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout’) for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Miniseries.
As in 2021, Marvel Studios went empty, at least at the main awards ceremony on Monday evening. Together were “Loki” and “Moon Knight“ was nominated for 14 Emmys, but in the end you only had to settle for the prize in one technology category, namely Best Sound Editing (“Moon Knight”), to be satisfied.
