Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hit theaters, there were a few hiccups for House of Ideas in theaters. The opportunity to focus on 13 Marvel films of the 21st century that have never seen the light of day.
Before Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the Avengers hit theaters, the Marvel universe has sometimes gone through failed films, good big turnips which marred the notoriety of the firm. Before the Marvel Universe belonged to Marvel Studios, exploitation rights were split between different studios, which gave a bit of everything for the first 10 years of the 21st century. Here are 13 Marvel films that were planned but never saw the light of day.
In 2003, Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, landed on the big screen for the first time. Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, The feature film sees Ben Affleck donning the blind vigilante costume. Despite its $ 179 million in revenue (for a budget of 78 million), the 20th Century Fox has canceled the sequel that was originally planned. The fault, above all, of the disastrous reviews.
Indeed, the feature film is very poorly received, as much by professional critics as by fans. In place, the studio decides to produce a spin-off centered on Elektra. Unfortunately for Jennifer Garner, the film receives even more destructive reviews than Daredevil, and buries all other potential development of the franchise. The two characters have since returned to the Netflix series Daredevil. A universe that has also since been canceled. Decidedly, Daredevil and Elektra are unlucky on their side …
Before Hulk only joined the MCU in 2008, first under the guise of Edward Norton, then under those of Mark Ruffalo, the jade giant was embodied by Eric Bana. Indeed, in 2003, the great Ang Lee was commissioned by Universal Pictures to direct a film centered on the Hulk, years after the cult series worn by Lou Ferrigno. At the time, the Hulk was a box office success, with over $ 245 million in revenue (for a budget of 137 million). A score that pushed Universal to opt for a sequel.
Initially, Hulk 2 was due out in 2005, but a series of delays in pre-production complicated matters. Screenwriter James Schamus had even practically finished the script and included The Abomination in his narrative. While in 2006, Universal had not yet formalized the production of Hulk 2, Marvel Studios and Universal have agreed to reboot the license within the MCU by producing The Incredible Hulk.
The punisher 2
Before Jon Bernthal became the new face of Frank Castle, three other actors played the character in the cinema : Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson. In 2004, Jonathan Hensleigh directs The Punisher, with Thomas Jane as Frank Castle and John Travolta as big bad. Globally, The Punisher was rather well received by American critics (less by the French), especially for the cold and meticulous interpretation of Thomas Jane.
Despite only $ 54 million in box office revenue (for a budget of 33 million), Lionsgate studios have given the green light for a Punisher 2. Jonathan Hensleigh and Thomas Jane were both slated to return and filming was slated to begin in 2005. Unfortunately, the project remained in development for over three years, but never came to fruition. Blame it on a script that didn’t suit anyone. In 2007, the project was canceled in favor of The Punisher – War Zone which comes out the same year.
Punisher – War Zone 2
Speaking of Punisher – War Zone, Lexi Alexander’s film should also have had a sequel. The version worn by Ray Stevenson was indeed to have a sequel despite a huge box office failure: only $ 10 million in revenue for a budget of $ 35 million. And despite that waffle, Lionsgate absolutely wanted to produce a sequel, still directed by Lexi Alexander. But the studio did not have time to develop its project since the rights to exploit the character have reverted to Marvel Studios who decided to produce the series The Punisher with the help of Netflix.
That is sure the biggest disappointment on this list. After the trilogy Spiderman with Tobey Maguire which ended in 2007, Sam Raimi wanted to produce a fourth film. A famous feature film that we will unfortunately never see. Spider-Man 4 simply collapsed in face of the expectations of fans and Sony. The…
