Super Mario is perhaps the most famous video game character ever and has dominated the platformer genre for decades with new masterpieces. But so far there has been no success in the film business. Although its first theatrical appearance in 1993 enjoys a certain (ironic) cult status, the “Super Mario” live-action film is generally regarded as a big pile of crap that blocked Nintendo’s Hollywood ambitions for almost 30 (!) years.
So it’s time for the plumber to do justice to his job title and finally get rid of this crap or rather: make him forget it with a successful film. The first trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated film has now been released!
So for the first time we can get a glimpse of the new big screen adventure, which (in the original English language) boasts a top-notch cast behind the mic: So speaks Chris Pratt (“Jurassic World’, ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’) starring the mustachioed video game icon. Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) lends her voice to Princess Peach.
Also included: Jack Black (Jumanji”) as villain Bowser, Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) as Mario’s brother Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key (“Predator – Upgrade”) as Toad, Seth Rogen (“Superbad”) as the legendary monkey Donkey Kong , Fred Armisen (“Saturday Night Live”) as his grandfather Cranky Kong, and Kevin Michael Richardson (“Mortal Kombat” from 1995) and Sebastian Maniscalco (“The Irishman”) as Bowser’s minions Kamek and Spike.
Incidentally, the action-adventure is produced by Studio Illumination, which created the most successful animated film franchises ever with the “Despicable Me” and “Minions” films.
German theatrical release of “Super Mario Bros.” film date is March 23, 2023. You can watch the teaser trailer again in the English original below, in which you get a first impression of Pratt as the title hero and Jack Black as Bowser:
