In “Maleficent”, Angelina Jolie plays the fairy who casts a spell on young Aurora, the princess of “Sleeping Beauty”. Eager to keep the character’s scary appearance, the actress frightened several of her children, who made an appearance in the film.
Maleficent : a reinterpretation of a classic from Disney studios
In 2014, before The jungle Book Where The beauty and the Beast, Disney studios dusted off another classic from their catalog with Maleficent. First feature film by Robert Stromberg, visual effects specialist awarded the Oscar for Best Production Design for Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, the film is a live adaptation of The Sleeping Beauty, 1959 cartoon based on the tales of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault.
Corn Maleficent begins long before the baptism of the king’s and queen’s daughter, marred by the intrusion of the wicked fairy who casts a terrible spell on her. In order to explain the reasons behind this curse, the feature film comes back to the childhood of this wicked fairy. The latter grows in the Moor, a land populated by magical creatures living in harmony.
Despite the divide between the Moor and the Kingdom of Men, Maleficent puts her mistrust aside when she meets Stéphane, a boy who came to his land to steal a precious stone. As an adult, the fairy embodied by Angelina Jolie has moved away from the young man played by Sharlto Copley, but has not given up her love for him.
Until Stéphane, out of greed, betrays Maleficent by cutting off his wings. Victim of violence and betrayal of the future king, the heroine presented as a monster then does everything to protect the Heath and cannot quench her thirst for revenge …
Elle Fanning lends her features to teenage Aurore in this rereading. Sam Riley, Lesley Manville, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton and Brenton Thwaites round out the cast.
Angelina Jolie’s transformation
For her interpretation of the bad fairy, which she plays again in 2019 in Maleficent: The Power of Evil, Angelina Jolie has many sources of inspiration. One of them is none other than Lady Gaga. The singer’s look, starting with the pale complexion and the prostheses on the cheeks that she sports for the album Born This Way, is one of the bases for the appearance of Maleficent.
The actress has also worked on her intonation and accent so that her voice is close to that of Eleanor Audley, who doubles Maleficent in the original version of The Sleeping Beauty. A way for the actress to perpetuate the disturbing side of the character. Executive producer on the project, Angelina Jolie would also have insisted on keeping the scary character of the fairy. So much so that she did not fail to scare her children Pax and Zahara, who make an appearance in the feature film during the baptism.
Asked by Progress in May 2014, the star said about it:
I made the mistake of coming out of my dressing room in Maleficent. Pax left screaming. As I thought he was joking, I chased him. When he broke down in tears, I took my time removing my dentures so that he could find his mom under the makeup. Conversely, my daughter Vivienne didn’t care.
“Vivienne was perfect”
Reason why little Vivienne has inherited the role of five-year-old Aurore. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly and quoted by First, Angelina Jolie does not hide her pride in her daughter’s participation in the film. She confides on this subject:
It had to be a kid who liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns, eyes, and claws. Vivienne was perfect.
A presence that offers a short but very pretty scene in a wood, where the chemistry between mother and daughter is totally perceptible.
