A film about Belgium’s most famous criminal, rapist and murderer, Marc Dutroux, is in development. Directed by Fabrice Du Welz, the film should be released at the end of 2022 and already has Benoît Poelvoorde in its cast.
The cinema takes hold of the “Dutroux affair”
Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz, who recently directed Worship and Inexorable, will stage a film noir inspired by the terrible “Dutroux affair”. Marc Dutroux, criminal, rapist, pedophile, murderer, is infamous for the case that bears his name, precisely the kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of five people including minors, between 1995 and 1996. Diagnosed psychopath, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2004 and is remembered as the culprit of the incident the darkest and most sordid in Belgian history.
Fabrice Du Welz’s “most ambitious” film
A story of which the filmmaker Fabrice Du Welz has wanted to make a film “for more than 15 years”, and which will be his most ambitious project. Words entrusted to The last hour, who estimates that the film should hit screens in late 2022 or early 2023. And also believes that it is sure to be the cinematic event of the year. We still know little about this project, except that it is freely inspired by the course of the criminal and that it will be centered on Paul Charlier, an investigator – fictitious – obsessed with the arrest of Marc Dutroux after the have narrowly missed. The producer Jean-Yves Roubin, to whom we owe in particular Titanium, told Variety that the film would mix the thriller and the black thriller, in a vein similar to that of Zodiac by David Fincher.
A casting that promises to be grandiose
This is the only name attached to the cast of Maldoror but it is already a nice guarantee: Benoît Poelvoorde. The immense Belgian actor will be reunited with his compatriot for a third consecutive collaboration. He was indeed on the bill of Worship and Inexorable. If we do not yet know his role, it is said that he will be one of the central characters of the plot. For now, no more names related to the project. But Fabrice Du Welz affirms that there will be many characters and that we will find many well-known Belgian actors and actresses.
